How is it pronounced on its own?
Update:I want to know how because I saw it in a name and always wondered how it sounded like. I wondered because I wanted to see if I ever wanted to use it in a name (person). The name I saw it in was Saïx. The name was supposed to be Japanese. This additional detail is directed to someone who said it was called a dieresis, I think it was Dude the Obscure.

The letter "i" with a diaresis (2 dots) over it never occurs by itself in any language that I know of. It always occurs only in conjunction with another vowel; the diaresis indicates that the vowel sould of "i" is to be pronounced separately from the other vowel. For example, the word "naïve" is pronounced with 2 syllables -- na-ive -- whereas "naive" without the diaresis would, if it existed, be pronounced with 1 syllable (something like "nave").
