Depends upon the PLC and its capabilities. Generally you can add a communications module or use an existing COM port. Standard and proprietary communication protocols are available some are designed to exchange data between other PLC's (PROFIBUS) and others used to communicate with computers and other devices (RS232, RS485, Ethernet).
