You've got the right idea, I believe.
Consider this : when you plot sin 2x, you'll compress everything by 2. Meaning, π becomes π/2, 2π becomes π, and so on.
ie. You are dividing all these x values by 2.
Similarly for compressing by π, you divide everything by π. π/2 becomes 1/2. π becomes 1. 2π becomes 2.
