That happened to me when I visited a Chinese university campus in 1985. I met a group of Chinese physics students while I was just wandering around sight-seeing. They wanted to talk with a native speaker of English because they knew their teacher of English had a heavy accent. We talked mostly about Chen-Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee, the Chinese winners of the Nobel Prize in physics. Since all I had to do to help was talk, it was easy and I didn't have anything else pressing to do. I felt good that I could help, even if it was only a little. And if I ever study Chinese, I certainly would want a native speaker to talk with me and have patience.
