When I tried to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista before, my computer crashed and I couldn't get it to come back on. See, what happened was I had 2 different windows on it. So, how do I keep this from happening again, while trying to upgrade Vista to Windows 7?

If you run the W7 disk as an upgrade (so long as your laptop will run the W7 OS) then the OS will do everything as an upgrade, your files and software should stay in tack there may be issues if you upgrade to a 64bit system but if you stay on the 32bit platform then I don't think there will be any problems as Vista and W7 are similar
Make a back up of ALL your files and I would copy pictures and files to another drive of device so that you have them safe in case of a failure of some description
When you UPGRADE, do not restart and boot to the disk. Here is how you upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7.
1. Put the disk into the computer while it is on and in Vista.
2. If it autoruns, that is good- do the stuff there.. Otherwise go to "Computer" and run the setup or other exe file from the disk. (You might just have to double click on the disk in "Computer.")
3. It will go through all the prompts, etc.
4. It WILL restart during the process and have more prompts and questions etc. This is fine, it has to do all that. The important thing is just that you started the process while the computer was on in the first place rather than booting from the disk. This is the difference between a clean install and an upgrade.
5. When it is done, you will have Windows 7 and your computer will have kept all of your files and such intact.
Also notice that if you try a clean install rather than an upgrade, the Windows key will not work. (I learned this the hard way.) You can only do an upgrade with an upgrade disk/key.
Hope this helped! :-)
