The INITIAL actions of the US were to Annex Hawaii and the Philippines and make them colonial territories... to take a people and make them subjects of the USA without direct representation in Congress - basically why WE had our revolution against the Crown.
However, we made Hawaii a State with full representation in Congress... and we had scheduled independence for the Philippines in 1941, and granted it immediately after WWII.
We ran a MUCH more benevolent "colony" system than England.
It went against self-determination. It was colonialism even though the Americans never admitted it.
But they've never let their ideals inconvenience them. Whether it was allowing slavery, refusing human rights, toppling democratically elected leaders of other countries, assassinating democratically elected leaders of other countries, invading other countries, or stealing from other countries.
