This is the process which allows a single celled zygote to develop into a multicellular adult organism which can contain hundreds of different types of cells. During the growth of more complex organisms immediately after conception, these cells will start to differentiate into different organs and tissues. Without this vital step in the development of multicellular organisms, there would be no way for such organisms to support themselves and survive. Differentiation allows for specialization such that each cell shares the responsibilities and burdens that living things must accommodate such that no individual cell performs all life processes.
