Okay so I got this wrong on a French test and it's driving me insane!
I learned when a verb is followed by a direct object in the passé composé, it is no longer an ètre verb.
Which one of these is correct?:
Je suis nagé au lac.
Or
J'ai nagé au lac.
Also please explain why.

j'ai nagé dans le lac
First, your sentence doesn't have a direct object, it has a propositional phrase (in the lake). you could swim on your own, without the object. J'ai nage dans le lac. Also, my instinct says "dans le lac" not "au lac". But prepositions are hard to learn, so I might well be wrong.
Second, i'm not sure about the "followed by a direct object", cause "J'ai parlé à Tim" would not, in my mind, take etre, but avoir. Same as Je lui ai parle.
