'Self esteem' means one's estimation of one's self. If you have a low estimation of your value, to yourself, to others, to society, to whatever it is that you relate yourself to, that is 'low self-esteem'. That's really all it is. Your own estimation of your own value.
Self-Esteem is the way in which one views oneself. In their personal life and their professional life, it is the way in which they would like others to perceive them. If they present themselves as confident (even if they are not), their employers and future friends will see them as such. If they perceive themselves to be worthless and ugly...they will most likely have that kind of attitude in their speech, body language, and work productivity.
