I've heard that it was common for early settlers of North America to abandon their colonies to live off the land with Natives instead. I've been trying to dig up proof of this but can't find any. With the exception of Roanoke, I haven't found any other examples confirmed by reputable sources. There's one Quora thread where people say that it is true, yet there were no links to cited sources. If someone could provide me a link that says it was something that happened regularly, I would greatly appreciate it

George Carmack, one of the possible founders of the Klondike gold was one such. He had learned native languages, and married a native woman in a tribal ceremony. He was travelling with his wife's family when one of them found the gold (likely Keish, or Skookum Jim Mason) on August 16th, 1896.
