Do you always have to do a formal test to know the presence of asbestos? ?
We have a company coming by to check our house that was built in the 1940’s some have these flexible aluminum covered pipes in the closets and in the attic. He said it was asbestos...shouldn’t it be tested first? Thanks!

he now recognizes the ordinary uses from the 1940s. but do get a second opinion -- some of these guys lie.
I've known a lot of people working in homes through the years and the general belief is that if you suspect it might be asbestos, you assume it is until you've had it tested and know without a doubt it is not. I could be wrong but I don't know of any way to be 100% sure without it being tested.
