"I'm just tired" when you ask if they're sad. I mean, so many people say that when they're depressed and everybody seemse to believe it over and over again.
A lot of people are just tired. Sometimes they are exhausted. I believe it. I believe that feeling tired and stressed is also depressing. And i also am sure that depression manifests itself in tiredness.
You are in chicken and egg land here. Don't assume. Just be there.
They may or may not actually be depressed. Sometimes saying "No, I'm just tired" is a way of telling you they do not want to discuss whatever is making them sad. If so, you should respect their privacy and allow them to share or not share the truth about their feelings.
People do not like to admit to themselves or anyone else that they are sad or depressed, which also means they do not want to talk about it, so respect their mood and let them come out of it on their own.
