The difference between the two is common sense. You can be the smartest person but not have a shred of common sense. But you don't have to be smart to be reasonable.
Look at the example of King Solomon found in 1 kings 3:16-28. Its and interesting account of how simply he solved a tricky problem by wisdom.
wise - that usually takes time to acquire....sees into the deeper reasons behind a situation....
You can be both......see, smart peeps, when they are young, tend to be a little on the arrogant side. When they fill up their life experience box a little they begin to see all the mitigating circumstances in the universe......
How to give an example? That is kind of tough for me right now.....
A smart person may advise a retired couple to sell their home for greater cash flow & admonish the couple for not jumping on the opportunity....where as a wise person may see the same cash flow opportunity & still realize that leaving the home you raised your children in isn't easy & try another approach if cash flow was such a problem....
Oy, crappy example, but the best I could come up with on the fly.....sorry....
PS: I ain't neither myself, but am hoping to live to "wise" someday, LOL
Wisdom, combined with foresight and insight is a culmination of what is learned through and by life experience. It's knowing what might happen, or what will likely happen in a given circumstance and acting on it, and ultimately making the correct choices based on what you know beforehand. Wise people "get the big picture". Not all people with wisdom are stupendously smart; just like not all smart people are wise. A wise person can figure out what is going on and act on it, so can a smart person, but one who is merely smart is left to grind out and think through the possibilities and things still may not get the results they expect.
It depends on the uses of those words. The way you are presenting it, a smart man will have a lot of knowledge, and wise man will know what to do with it; how to apply the information.
A smart person puts his trust in God and love people the way Jesus Christ told us too
Here is a promise that the prophet Jeremiah made Did this come true
Do people remember the Ark today ? or worry about it existence? Will me make another one ?
King James Bible
And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.
The difference is neither would ask a question like this and regard answers given by an archaic book meant to control populaces as truth.
@Artrackis: Socrates was an intelligent man, but I've never quite understood that quote. What does Socrates mean by "know"? Is his definition compatible with the modern theory of knowledge, or is it merely playing with semantics?

Wisdom and foolishness is always based on one's relationship with God.
(the fool has said in his heart this is no God;The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.; etc)
a random quote: Wisdom is the proper application of knowlege.
Like other commentors have said. Smartness means you have knowledge; wisdom means you use it in the best possible way.
Example:
Smart is the knowledge and ability to efficiently navigate within rush hour traffic.
Wise is leaving an hour early to avoid it all together. (less wear and tear on the car, less stress)
Smart is finding a good lawyer.
Wise is not committing the crime. (less money paid, less stress)
Smart is the expert Kung Fu artist.
Wise is making your enemy your friend.
(less bruises, more ice cream, more good, albeit tough conversations/disagreements.)
It depends on the uses of those words. The way you are presenting it, a smart man will have a lot of knowledge, and wise man will know what to do with it; how to apply the information.
A smart person might have knowledge. But A wise person knows how to use what he learns and apply it in his life.

Wise person puts his trust in God.
Smart person read some books or gained some experience, but will perish because of not putting his trust in God.
A fool thinks he is a wise man, but a wise man knows he is a fool.
