I finally cornered Vanessa at the cafeteria, and sat down opposite her. "Vanessa, it's time for us to have a [1] cozy, [2] heartfelt, head-to-head talk, about the late Doug West."

Kim and Sammy gave me a look, then left the table, so Vanessa and I could be alone.

Vanessa sighed. "I guess Captain Lisa told you, huh? Doug was [3] my dearest love. Nothing against you, James, but sometimes I wish he'd come back from that battle and not you."

Music was playing in the cafeteria. The song was "My Boyfriend is a Pilot." Silky Doll, the pop idol, was singing lyrics "[5] star light, star bright, shine on his plane tonight, ..." The song was horribly romantic. A tear coursed down Vanessa's cheek.

"If it would [6] please God, I'd trade places with Doug," I told her.

Vanessa wiped away the tear. "Don't be [7] in a hurry to go to Heaven, James," she said. "We need [8] reliable pilots like you."

I giggled. "Plot me a course to Heaven, and I'll let the autopilot [9] navigate it."

Vanessa unwrapped her sandwich, and took a bite. "This [10] oughta be good, but it isn't."

"Freeze dried, reconstituted, ain't like fresh," I agreed.

"Sometimes I feel like our lives out here are like that too," she said. "Whoa yeah, life goes o-on, long after the thrill of living's go-one," she sang loudly, startling me, and people at the adjacent tables.

It was a cool summer night, and as she sat wrapped in her favorite cozy blanket, she thought about the most heartfelt memory she has of him.

"My dearest love.." she mumbled in a meloncholy tone as she gazed into the infinite sky. "How I wish to see you one more time...Star light star bright, first star I see tonight,...ugh, what am I doing?!?" She looked down disgusted by her own foolishness. "Please god, I'm ready, I'm in a hurry! I know he's been reliable in the past but I just can't wait any longer!"

Suddenly she is startled by a loud knock on the door, then the sound of keys jingleling. The stranger starts unlocking the door, and slowly turns the knob. The heavy door creaks of old age. She stands up, filled with excitement and fear. The stranger casually steps in. Lit only by the glow of the heavens, the room is plagued with dim blue light. The stranger approaches her, gets face to face with her, and with his muscular chest against her, forces her to start taking steps back until she feels the wet, cold stones of the wall against her naked back. This tingles her spine, and as he grabs her wrists to restrain them, she notices he has brought something new this time. She quickly envisions him using it to navigate around her body and sensually thinks, "this oughta be good."

Miranda * stoked up a cozy fire in the fireplace and sat down in her favorite chair. She reached for her pen and notepad on the table to begin her [heartfelt] letter to Jim*

[My dearest love]. she started.

My sincerest [wish ] for you this holiday season is that you may find the happiness in your life that you have missed out on but you truly deserve. I thought of you this evening when I looked up into the December sky and thought ,[star light, star bright] the first star I see tonight. Wish I may and wish I might have this wish I wish tonight.........and that was to be with you. You and I both know that stars , no matter how brightly they may shine are not going to enhance this relationship that I wished I could of had with you.'

When she finished her letter she tucked it inside the envelope and set it back on the table with her pen and note pad. The fire was crackling and surrounded the silence in the room with warmth and thoughts of things they way they might had been if she would had only accepted Jim's* proposal. [Please, God], she thought to herself , I know I shouldn't not be [in a hurry ] but I get so tired of being alone.

Jim seemed to not be [reliable] when it came to fulfilling promises. Seems he wanted to [navigate] his route for his course in life differently than she had planned. Miranda* wanted to settle down, have a couple of kids playing in the yard, pink house and picket fence, and a sense of security in life. Jim * was not done traveling across country in his corporate career and jobs lifestyle.

Now she had second thoughts '[This oughta be good! ] she thought to herself and she picked up the letter and tossed it into the fireplace. Some things are best left unsaid
