"Hey Lieutenant Tamer," came the familiar voice of Kim, one of the bridge crew. "What's shaking?" I was sitting at a bench in the less-used corridor leading to the big observation room. This area was called the "make-out deck" for obvious reasons. There were couples on the other benches.
"Just sitting here waiting for Laurie to drop by," I told her. Kim sat down next to me.
"Does she know you're here?" asked Kim.
I shrugged. "She knows my duty schedule. She will find me, if she wants to. Hearts can never hide... well, maybe they can, it's a mighty big ship."
Kim giggled. "The last thing on my mind is romance. I just don't see how people can fall in love when, at any time, they could be killed by aliens."
There was a flash of explosion somewhere in space, then the blast shielding came down, blocking the window. I got to my feet. Kim tugged me down to the bench again. "Crimson Wing has your spot."
"'We live and die for those we love,'" I quoted the motto I'd painted on my fighter. "As long as I have a heart, I'll be ready to jump in when the bad guys come asking us to dance."
"Cool, nothing will keep us from getting back to Earth with you on the job," she said. "I get claustrophobic in here. Sometimes I want to tear down the walls of my quarters, hoping to find the blue skies and green hills of Earth, beyond them."
The alarm sounded. "Turn! Turn! Turn!" it seemed to say. "Combat personnel to battle stations. This is not a drill." Kim and I exchanged a quick, secret smile, then we began running.
Yes, I sure can! .......
