Shelby struggled to open the jar of cranberry sauce. “Here, give it to me” said Tom (being the kind who always wants to save the day) Tom grimaced falsely as his hands twisted and writhed to open the jar. “There you are” said Tom triumphantly. Shelby replied “Hey I loosened it for YOU He-Man” Her gentle laughter at the sight of her man helping her in the kitchen, signalled the love she held in her heart for him.
“I bet the Pilgrims never went to this trouble for their meals on Thanksgiving!” mused Tom. Shelby had planned a sumptuous feast for the day. Turkey with trimmings, Ham, 3 kinds of potato, beans, spinach and a vegetable medley in a cheese sauce that everyone seemed to like. That would be followed by pecan pie and pumpkin pie or there was always her special soused fruit salad. Pity this year there was only the two of them to enjoy it.
Shelby had hoped her folks would take the 4-hour journey and stay overnight with them. But since her Father’s stroke it had been too difficult for them to travel.
Shelby had been mindful of her parents all morning and she and Tom sat down to eat Shelby was feeling very reflective. As they bowed their heads in quiet Thanksgiving gratitude, at last the tears came. Tom reached out to lay his large strong hand over Shelby’s delicate trembling fingers. He was lost for words. Shelby deeply sobbed “I’ve forgotten to make Grandmommy’s Macaroni, how could I?” The sight of his wife in tears left Tom with just one thing to do. Leaving the table he returned with the cordless phone receiver. “Here, it’s your Mom” he gently whispered.
“Momma, I miss you, I love you. How’s Daddy?” For the next 20 minutes Shelby felt the comfort of her mother’s voice and began to smile at hearing good news of their health and welfare and she began to feel much better.
The food had gone cold, but it didn’t matter. On this day, for Shelby, the warmth of family was more important. Tom smiled the smile of one who loves and is loved. It was a good Thanksgiving after all.
The sweet aroma of CRANBERRY SAUCE fills the kitchen. LAUGHTER echoes from the living room while groans escape from the family room. I am happy. Today is a day noted in history for when PILGRIMS feasted in thanks and Americans do the same. It is that SPECIAL day of the year; a day filled with GRATITUDE, family fun, and great food. That's right, it is Thanksgiving Day AT LAST.
The relatives come in throughout the day. However, the one relative I will never see, my sister never came through the door. Because her funeral just occurred last month, the pain was still fresh as evidenced by the TEARS welling up in in my eyes. She loved Thanksgiving more than anyone and cooked amazing food for the family. The little tykes always loved her macaroni and cheese dish and affectionately called it GRANDMOMMY'S MACARONI.
When the day's festivities ended and the family gathered around the meal for the feast. Our eyes gleamed and our mouths watered with the delicious of yams, turkey, and other delectable food on the table. We all held hands and said our thanks and prayers. I silently added, "Goodbye Sarah, I know you look forward to this day every year. We're celebrating this day in honor of you as well. I MISS YOU. You'll never be forgotten... LOVE, Sally."
"YOU IDIOT!!!! You bought the whole berry cranberry sauce instead of the jellied variety? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??"
My sister Jane and I were having the Thanksgiving day bash at our house this year and she was getting a bit frazzled at the last minute!
I could hear the laughter coming from the living room as most of my relatives had already arrived.
Jane had laid in a hefty supply of Hard Apple Cider for the event, hoping that it would take the rough edges off the crowd! It sounded to me like she needed some herself!
I went to get her a tall glass!
In the living room , the pilgrims seemed to be getting restless, despite the gallon of cider they had already consumed!
I assisted Jane to get the special feast we had both prepared on the table before the in-laws started killing each other!
Aunt Julia expressed gratitude that at last we had both learned to cook as she took her first taste of Stove Top stuffing! Everyone ate heartily....the dinner was a total success!! There was lots of laughter and a few tears when my niece Mary knocked over the big dish of Grand-mommy's macaroni! Not to worry...she had a second one in the car...just in case we wanted seconds!
After a delicious dessert featuring both Mrs. Smith's and Mrs. Paul's products, we bid our family farewell. "I miss you already Aunt Silva" said my little niece as she stood up on her tippy-toes to kiss me!
I have mad love for my entire family but was glad this day was over....I would look forward to seeing all of them again...next year!
I love Crangerry Sauce. Every Thanksgiving we would all sit around and enjoy mutual laughter as we talked about the Pilgrims in days of yore. My special friends would sometimes join us. To show our gratitude we would, at last, hand out sweets. Tears of joy would come to our eyes as we all enjoyed Grandmommy's Macaroni. In writing this letter I want to say that I miss you and that I love you.
