Yes, there is always a chance a magnet can damage it, especially the hard drive. If you put a strong magnet on it, there's a good chance you'll have to say, "bye- bye, data!" Never take that risk, I say.
As the two previous answerer's have said, yes, magnets do cause problems. here, put the magnet next to a TV, do you get fancy colors? Yep. You won't get that with an LCD screen, but that doesn't mean that it'll cause issues. I don't know if you know, but in a motor, there is a magnet, like in an alternator in cars, or even just a little motor in a remote controlled vehicle, there is a little magnet wrapped in wires... that helps the motor to create electricity... like in big generators... so if you take that... magnet = energy... then one could conclude that magnets will effect the way energy is moved... and electricity is the result... so one could then ultimately conclude that the magnet will cause electrical issues if placed in a place in a long time. So... don't place magnets near anything electrical.
There is always a chance the magnet can damage them so it's best to keep them away. Sometimes it will have no effect, sometimes the effect can be really bad.

Magnets are NOT good for computers, laptop or desktop. Try to keep them away.
