At Sir William Lucas's, mr darcy finds to his surprise that he is beginning to be attracted to Elizabeth (having not thought much of her when he met her previously at the ball). he tries to engage her in conversation, and asks her to dance, but she, having taken a dislike to him because of his supercilious manners at the ball, refuses him. This only makes mr darcy more interested in her though, as he is used to young women admiring and flattering him, so Elizabeth's coolness towards him arouses his interest even more.
