I have an Eastsheen 4x4x4. It is good for some finger tricks but not others. It is incredibly smooth (you can do almost 360 degree turns with one flick) but it cannot cut corners AT ALL. Overall, I would say it is not good for finger tricks. Also, loosening it doesn't work, it just makes it more likely to pop.
I'm fairly sure that the Meffert's 4x4x4 is based on the old Rubik's mechanism. I don't have one but am planning to get one. They tend not to be great out of the box but with a bit of breaking in and some silicone spray they get better. I think that they spin about as well as an ES 4x4x4 and cut corners better.
Overall, I think that Meffert's 4x4x4s are better.
