It happens in my friends car after driving a little bit. If cruise control is set above 80, once it decides to slow you down it will automatically unset the cruise control and you are unable to reset it either above or below 80.

Nah
Yes, its called the car manufacturer covering their behind just so that a fool doesnt kill themselves going 100mph on cruise control.
Many cars are not capable of going over 80. Your distributor may have an governor to guard against excessive engine speed.
yes possible ..
Safety is the reason why. No one off of a race track can drive safely over 80 mph.
Look in the owner's manual .
YES, GOD!! Tell your friend to be thankful!!
a fool does that,
someone wants to pass? move the hell over,
It would help a lot to know the make/model/year. Last year we rented a Kia Sorento and it got squirrely when we tried to set the cruise control at 80 mph.
EDIT - by the way, if it is a late model Ford I would bet MyKey is set. See the source.
One possible issue is a failure of the cruise control circuit itself.
It is also possible another issue is causing the engine to go into 'limp mode'. If that is the case, the 'check engine light' should be on and you need to have the car checked ASAP.
Actually, you should at least have the OBD II codes read to give you a starting place for a real diagnosis.
