You may be homophobic if….?

Many people hate the words ‘homophobia’ or ‘homophobic’ being applied to them because they believe the word only means fear of homosexuals or homosexuality and they honestly don’t feel that way. I can accept that. But I think those two words can be used in another way that might apply.

Let’s say you are a heterosexual male and your new girlfriend had dragged you to some party where you notice that many of the men in attendance are gay. How long can you last without telling someone you are straight?

Your wife needs to use the restroom at the mall and she wants you to hold her purse until she comes back. Do you do it? How does it make you feel?

Are you uncomfortable in situations where your heterosexuality might be in question? Why should you be “afraid” of what others think of you when you know the truth?

I have invented a word for this and it's "fagaphobia." It's the fear that touching items (such as pink things or purses) or situations (like sitting next to a gay person) can cause you to be infected with gay germs.

It's an irrational fear but very real for some people, especially for the insecure.

Well, it would be my responsibility to go to that party without complaint. I would find it extremely odd just to go "I'm straight" randomly in conversation. If I'm there with someone who I'm in a relationship with, it should be implied anyway simply because the chances are rather high that I would be with that person quite often. I would get offended and upset if a homosexual attempted to make any move towards me, but, would react respectfully with a "No, I'm not homosexual." My opinion of that person would be lowered though, simply because they had embraced a life of sin.

Yes, I would hold the purse. It should bring up any particular feelings, other then the occasional thought of "Gee, it's rather bring waiting here, but I'll do it". It's only nice to hold someone's purse if she has to go to the bathroom and asks you to do it. (obviously she trusts you.

I tend not to care what other people think as far as that goes. If they won't take me at my word, then what good are they. Yes, I care what other people think to an extent; I don't want everyone to think that I am an evil lying thug, but getting people to think would be hard when you're a 16 year old that carries a briefcase.

I can honestly say that I am not a homophobic. I do think that homosexuality is wrong an unnatural, and would never allow a homosexual to become one of my friends, but I do not fear homosexuality in the least.
