The appeal in fictitious characters is they are human like, have a personality to flaunt and they are out in the open for all to see. And they accomplish our inner desires.
The majority of people feel powerless because deep down they know they'll die impoverished and shivering on the street someday just because some greedballs decided that they want enough money for 800 lifetimes.

Entertainment in the fantasy realm is the appeal. Anyone who thinks that corrupts people is a moron and needs to get a life and some self esteem.
