Thank you.
Update:To clarify, I wasn't meaning to imply that runes are equivalent to Chinese characters, only that the Latin alphabet replaced the former gradually as pinyin appears to have begun to gradually replace the latter.

Runes aren't characters in the Chinese sense; they are alphabetic letters that were derived from Old Italic alphabets, even Etruscan or Old Latin. They were replaced by the later Latin alphabet simply because of the wide influence of Roman writing and culture in the context of Christianity.
As for your question, it's not impossible that an alphabetic rendering of Chinese will eventually replace the traditional characters, but I think that would be a cultural tragedy.
chinese have and are always very cultural, throughout history, they have influenced other people from different countries I.E korea, japan, vietnam etc to follow their culture, which suggest they're strongly live by it.
although it's hard to learn the writing system, i don't think they want to change it, their attitude is '' it's hard, that's life, learn it'' korean have abandoned the chinese writing system and made their own alphabet, but it wasn't their original writing system anyways so they're not as attached to it as the chinese
if they do suddenly decide to change it, it will just be a mess in the whole country, books would have to be change sooner or later...it will just cost billions!!!
Well, your question is very blunt for one.
The Chinese writing system has been around for over thousands of years. It's working for over 2 billion people on earth, and I think most people appreciate its uniqueness. The Latin language died down due to small populations of people who were able to speak fluently. I don't think the Chinese writing system is going to die with over 2 billion people who's fluent with it. It's only going to overpower the other languages. U.S schools are already making Mandarin a supplementary language course. And Mandarin is already the second business language aside English.
