I am still doing holiday shopping and I don’t even know what my family wants. So instead of shopping for them and picking something random out, I thought I would give my family $10.00 each on gift certificates out to eat. Is this cheating? Does this count or is it still better than nothing? What will be the right thing to do? I asked what they want and they told me I need to think and figure it out because it doesn’t matter. Is it the thought that counts?

Yes, the thought counts, but a $10 gift certificate is the lazy way out.
If all you have is $10 to spend per family member, then figure out even a daily thing that they use regularly or that they've said they need and get it for them. So for a female relative, it may be a tube of her favorite lip gloss or lipstick. For a male, it might be a stack of car magazines or collar stays for his dress shirts.
If you want to do a gift certificate for a dinner out, then the best thing to do is to buy ONE gift certificate and make a card saying "Dinner at Main Street Cafe is on me!" Just be sure to tell your parents how much the gc is for so they aren't surprised if the total is $75 and your gc is only for $40.
I think more people need to consider giving gift cards at christmas. Too many unwanted gifts are given, too much money wasted when all you're trying to do is be thoughtful.
I find buying Christmas presents really stressful because no one ever seems to know what they want.
I think you've made the right decision
I think it's a great idea! Gift cards are great. It's not cheating! At least you aren't giving them something that they will never use, or worse yet, something that will sit around or get thrown out!
Write them a poem and save the ten bucks. It is the thought that counts.
Yes it will. I think it is a good idea..
