to me it seems he had a massive ego and thought nothing of leaving his own country(where he was supposed to be king) and plundering the Orient for his own pats on the back
He conquered the known world. For the most part, when he conquered a place, he allowed it's gpovernement to remain and keep it's authority while only having to pay homage to him. He vastly improved the state of every place he conquered.
