Why does Word open in size 10 font if the standard is 12?
Why does Word reverse quotation marks when added before periods? Is this ever grammatically correct? For example I type a sentence and then a period- . Then I attempt to put quotation marks around the last word before the period- “period”. The result is a word with both quotation marks facing the same direction (that of the first).
There is also the issue of words typed after quotation marks and periods not being auto capitalized, “like”. this.
I am not complaining; I just cannot understand why the system was set to operate in this manner.

Have you set 12 point as the default font size by expanding the font group on the Home tab, selecting the font then 12 points the click DEFAULT then click OK?
The quotes and capitalization are controlled in the Proofing, Auto Correct, Auto Format as You Type section of Word Options. It would appear that either selections haven't been made in this area or bad selections have been made.
Depends on what upgrade u got like mine goes up to 72!
