I can’t imagine volunteering for Iraq or Vietnam or any other nonsense that only serves to make the wealthy elite more wealthy. Why would I give my life (and I’m not religious so I know I only got the one) to line others pockets?
Of course I get it if someone was to pose a real threat like WWI or WWII. In that scenario I would volunteer. Failing a real war though, why do people volunteer?

If you think that there is a such a thing as a non-serious war, then you are deluding yourself. Perhaps you want to tell the survivors and the families of those who died in the scud missile attack that killed 28 members of a reserve supply unit during Operation Desert Storm that it wasn't a serious war?

I asked them all the time why they signed up and the most common answer was this is our only way of getting a decent education or trade in our country.
Because they see being a warrior as a rite of passage which will make them an adult, rather than just an unemployed 18 year old in their Mom's basement.
Because their parents are pricks and toss them out at age 18. Where exactly can most 18 year olds get a job which will support them, let alone a girl or wife, these days?
tradition.
They need an excuse as to why they aren't going to college, that their parents can't dismiss.
Their parents ideology demands it.
They're broke and want to go to college.
Well you may think it's meaningless, but others may find some worth behind their efforts at war.
People may disagree with you on the seriousness of the issue. They may also like combat just for the sake of combat
Patriotism. The calling for a cause that is noble and just.
Liberals don't understand this...
