It's only effective against psychic, which you can use dark or bug types for. I check sites like gamefaqs and ign and almost everyone recommends a ghost type. Why?
Update:I have a honchkrow which is dark, but also been raising a Scyther which has X-Scissor.

Possibly because only Ghost types prevent a move called Rapid Spin from hitting when it is used on the target. While Rapid Spin is stupid weak (20 power), it removes all entry hazards (Spikes, Stealth Rock, Toxic Spikes), trapping moves (Fire Spin, Whirlpool), and Leech Seed from the side of whoever used it. The main focus of this is getting rid of entry hazards, since those are used so much in competitive play, but all things aside, you don't REALLY have to have a Ghost type, just use whatever Pokes you want
One reason is because it's super effective against Psychic types. Another is because Normal-type attacks can't do damage against it because of its Ghost typing.
Also a lot of Ghost-types usually have the Levitate ability which means Ground attacks can't do damage against it which makes it a great partner for a Double Battle especially if you're using a Pokémon that knows Earthquake.
I don't know. I hardly ever use ghost type. But I see it too. Actually I hardly ever have dark or bug.
They can not be attacked by normal and ground type attacks and are strong against psychic they are also very strong.
