I used to do Chinese traditional dance from kindergarten through 5th grade. I was decent at it and learned the choreographies at a normal pace. However, I’ve quit for about 5 years now and I’ve decided to start dancing again (but this time hip pop and jazz) at the beginning of this year. For some reasons I just can’t remember choreography and I learn the steps extremely slowly. Like it’s already been 2 months now but I still really suck and forget the moves easily. The instructor tells me a step, moves on, and I’ve forgotten it already. Y’all I literally think I’m just mentally disabled now. Like is it just because I’m untalented or why else can’t I do it even though I’ve done it as a kid??

First it has only been two months. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Regarding memorizing choreography that takes time to build those skills . Way more than just two months. Not dancing for 5 years and you are a beginner again.
You have to learn to get out of your head and into your body memory. In other words don’t try to think the steps. When your teacher shows the steps do it along with her by marking the steps with your hands or do it very small with your body. That starts getting it into your body memory. You will get better at this the more you do this.
