I'd blame Etymology!

Personally, I think the word was originally "Lithp" and someone who had a lisp couldn't say it anyway but lisp so it caught on as a joke and then the joke and the original word were forgotten
It's onomatopoeia - the word itself sounds like - well - a lisp.
There are other word that sound like what they mean:
buzz, click, crackle, flush, kiss,.....
A gay guy. No offense to gay guys, but the flaming ones talk like that.
