number '3' is not part of Dalton's atomic theory - Atoms change into other atoms in chemical reactions.
Dalton did not think atoms of one kind changed into another type of atom during chemical reactions. He believed that when materials reacted, the atoms composing the matter separated themselves from each other and then reassembled into a different arrangement. The reaction vessel still contained the exact number of each kind of atom before and after the reaction - the atoms were simply put together in a different fashion.
