More than you want to know: I have a book called "Cheddar", which is the history of cheddar cheese. I forget exact details because I read it 3-4 years ago.
Before WWI America had a robust cheese business that rivaled the UK. Just before the war we came up with "pasteurized food product", which is a cheese like substance made from vegetable oil in addition to milk.
It single handedly destroyed American cheese's reputation in the world, from which we still have not yet recovered. And it gave us the first, most famous product of it's kind which is Velveeta.
And from there comes the general answer to your question. The roots of that orange powder come from this story. Kraft mac and cheese dates to 1937, during the depression.

Never. Velveeta shells&cheese came in a little pull tab can though.
I first encountered Kraft "dinner" (mac and cheese) in the late 1960's, and it used powdered "cheese" ... NOT in a can.
Kraft dinner originated in 1937, and it was because of this powder. I doubt if it ever cam in a can.
It really is not very nutritious. And the cheese is not real cheese.

It doesn't. If you see one, it is a different brand.
To my knowledge, never.
That is the more "expensive" mac-n-cheese in a box. The cheese now comes in a pouch and pretty sure it has the Velveeta name on the box
It still does as well as in a jar!
i think you could always buy powdered cheese.
