Before you tell me, "Just watch it," and stuff like that. I have seen the movie. Heck, I HAVE the movie. But, even after watching it, I still don't see what the big deal is. Sure, it's a great musical and such, but what makes it so popular? Is there some aspect or underlying theme that I just don't see? Is it the fact that ValJean is not just a character, but a symbol for human redemption that gives people hope that they have a chance to fix the mistakes that they've made? Is it because Fantine is a symbol for teenage anxiety when she sinks into desperation and we can relate to that? Is it because Eponine is a strong woman who still has her insecurities and we can relate to that? Or is there something closer to the surface that draws people in?

Le miserables was originally a French novel written in the 1800's and is considered on of the greatest novels of the 19 century. It eventually adapted into the stage, television, and film. It explains some of Europe's history through a story of love, hardship, etc. The reason why people love the movie so much is different for everyone. Some people love the story, some people love musicals, some people think it has deep symbolic meaning, etc. There are even people who just like it because everyone else does.
Read the book and/or review of the book and you will understand more I think. Movies only present a superficial view of the author's intention.
I haven't a clue. I don't care for it at all. Not in my top 30 musicals.
