Martin Luther was unaware as to the gravity of difficult the church faced during a desperate and troubled time.
I seriously doubt he had the desire to completely break from the Catholic church to form his own belief since the latter would require a lot of support.
Although, Luther gained the support of King Henry VIII the latter king used the transition in an exploited manner.
England via the King did not like taking orders from a Pope in Italy nor did appreciate the Pope in not allowing him an annulment from Catherine of Aragon.
Truthfully, when you take the time to review the 95 thesis the differences were not great enough to cause such a separation.
Furthermore, as historians we have to conclude that when the Reformation occurred many other events were taking place in England that promoted the separation on a grand scale.
The above information is a very brief outline, the History behind the Reformation is actually very involved and complex..
