Alfred Wegener failed to identify a mechanism to explain his theory. Just as many men before Charles Darwin who proposed the idea of evolution, they lacked an explanation of a mechanism, and thus were not highly supported. Alfred Wegener had more evidence to support his hypothesis than those before him, but he could not prove it through an observable mechanism. He spent his last breaths working on finding the evidence to support his theory, but unfortunately he did not. It wasn't until after his death that our knowledge of plate tectonics allowed us to revive his theory.
