Stay away from flowers until you know the person better.... no chocolate either. I think the key is being thoughtful and original.... Stereotypical romantic stuff is too cheesy. For a casual date I might try cooking something good, not too heavy, don't decorate the plates too much, and have a nice comfortable house with no one there. Try cooking together, or even an evening BBQ outside. Alcohol is key but don't get too drunk! Maybe also watch a movie at home (easy to start a make out session at home watching a movie). Going to a movie is not good first date material, when have you ever seen two dudes making out in a theatre? Also you can't talk. The things that make good gay romance is privacy, originality, and alcohol to ease nerves and facilitate conversation. Save real romance for a little bit after the getting to know you phase, good gay romantic stuff are weekend trips, and thoughtful personalized presents. MAYBE flowers/candy on valentines day as a kind of cute joke.
