I can't imagine anyone asking if other cops use this pharmacy, but guessing could happen. But with cops, then if they use this pharmacy and (if) they are wearing their uniform, then you would know they are cops. But in general, (whoever) uses this pharmacy, would have no clue (what) profession they work in.
But, to violate HIPPA, would be that does (X-person) use this pharmacy Or what does (X-person) drugs that are prescribed to them.
To violate, is to give (specific) medical information to (anyone) that is not allowed to get that information.
You wouldn't be violating HIPPA because it is not an unauthorized disclosure of personally identifiable medical information. Ask your supervisor to arrange a time for you to get more training or at least access to the fundamental rules. If you're a licensed pharmacist, you would already have this knowledge. If you're the janitor, there may be a different standard of care to prevent unlawful disclosure.
Technically it's not a violation of the law. But in general you shouldn't be giving out any information.
Since your an employee, you need to be nice about it. But remember, he's the one being rude in the first place. The guy has no business asking such questions.
Saying yes or no is not disclosing any names or conditions or medications. Now the next question is what does the PHARMACY say. Would they approve of you answering that question? You would probably be better off saying that the pharmacy would prefer you not giving out that information(whether they care or not).

You work in a Pharmacy and are confused by "HIPPA" laws?
Well, you are more confused than you thought. It's HIPAA.
Say, "I don't know."
yes.

Not a medical question, no HIPAA violation.
Answering that would not be a hipaa violation. It seems obvious that any pharmacy may see any number of people in a variety of careers.
A simple "I don't have access to that information" or "I really don't know" would be appropriate in this situation. Be as nonspecific as possible.
