Ok... I know in some cultures it is pretty much expected that a baby girl have her ears pierced early.

My daughter was almost 2, but she did decide. She wanted to wear mommy's earrings and I explained that she did not have holes and it hurt to get holes... she wanted them anyway. The pain level is not even as bad as getting a shot! She cried, but when she finished the lollipop they gave her, she was ready to go back and get pierced again just to get more candy!

For a 3 month old, I think the gun method is best. However, it would be ideal if you could have them use 2 guns and do both ears at exactly the same time. Otherwise, she is going to be very agitated for the second one!! This was how they did my daughter's... 2 guns, 2 ladies, and a count of one, two, THREE!

But be aware... the starter studs used with the guns are thicker than a normal earring. I had no problem slipping a 14 guage ring into a hole where I'd just removed a starter stud. A normal earring is more like 18-20 guage (larger number = thinner). But once healed, a gun-pierced hole will shrink down to the size of a thinner earring, especially in children.

But I do NOT recommend just pushing an earring through. The gun is fast... less pain and more accurate. Also, the special starter studs, while thicker than a normal earring, also have a sharp pointed tip which also cuts down on the pain factor. I have never known anyone who was gun-pierced to get an infection from the piercing equipment. They are pretty careful, and it is actually the earring that pierces the ear... not the gun itself.

I had no problems with my daughter, but she was old enough to know not to pull on them and that they had to be cared for while healing. My great niece had her ears pierced as an infant, and as far as I know, they never had any trouble with hers. But obviously, this is going to vary from child to child.

It is extremely important that an infant or very young child never wear cheap jewelry because this can easily and quickly lead to an infection, even in a piercing that is already healed! If you can't afford gold, stainless steel is a good and inexpensive alternative.

For older children or adults, the needle is definitely the way to go!!! Actually, if you could arrange the same sort of thing (to do both ears at the same time) at a tattoo/piercing salon, *that* would be ideal.

Get her ears pierced at a Hairstyling School. I am a hairdresser, the school has to make sure the pierce gun is sterile (by law) ,they will re sterilize them infront of you if you request it. Pick out infant earrings(which have a shorter stem). I took my daughter to the school I studied in and had her ears done at 3 months(she was days shy of 3 months) and the reaction was next to nothing... Yes she was shocked, yes she cried a startled cry but when I removed her from the area, she was fine, she settled and fell asleep by the time I paid... (I also requested a double gun so her ears were done at the same time, one pop and that was it. My daughter is now 6 years old and has had no problems with her earrings.

My first girl was 1 month old. She slept through it. She never played with the earrings. She never knew the difference. My second daughter was 3 months I waited until she had her first round of shots cause she had some health issues. She fussed for about a second. And again they healed fast. She is almost one and we have never had a problem. My Doctor said that his personal view was 1 year, but there is no medical reason not to have it done. I would definitely use the guns.

My daughter is two and her ears are not pierce and it isn't because I don't like them actually I have 9 holes in one of my ears and three in the other. The reason is this....I believe it is a decision that my daughter should make whether or not she wants her ears pierced. I would hate to pierce them and then when she gets older her not want them. Also I feel that when she is old enought to ask me for them it will be something special to her. My sister n law pierced her daughters ears when she was a baby (because it is tradition in her culture) and the earings always fall out. If you are going to pierce your daughters ears take her to a salon where they can do it with a piercing gun so it is fast or do it at home with a sterile needle, ice cube and a potatoe and make sure the earing that you put in is surgical steel or gold. Don't just try to jam an earing threw the ear. But serously shouldn't your daughter decide whether she wants her ears pierced or not? You wouldn't go put a tatoo on her would you?

First of all, think about this for a second. Would you want someone jabbing needles thru your ears at that age?? I would never pierce my childs ears until they were old enough to say they wanted it done. I was 9, and again at 12 and again at 16. I am in my 30's now and don't wear earrings at all.

I waited and just recently took my 9 year old daughter to have her's pierced...they used two of those guns and did both ears at the same time...she has had no problems and she did even cry...the best way I think

I wouldn't pierce a baby's ear but if you do it do not go to the mall or have it done with a piercing gun. A piercing gun cannot be sterilized and those who use them have no training on health issues like cross contamination. A piercing gun also uses a tremendous amount of force. Have a reputable professional piercer do it. They have to be licensed and they use medical grade needles.

well, i personally wouldn't do it this young, but if you are absolutely going to, find someone at a tattoo shop that will do it. there, they will use a hollow needle to pierce her ears and there will be little to no chance for infections, as opposed to just sticking the earing through or having someone do it with a piercing gun. i am waiting until my daughter is old enough to make the decision on her own, but when she does we will do it this way. also, make sure any jewelry you use is surgical steel, as many children exposed to a lesser grade metal can develop allergies or may already have them. not fun!

I had my daughter's ears done at 2 months right after her first set of immunizations(which was recommended by her pediatrician) I took her to a salon and they healed properly and have not had a problem with them. She also just knows they have been there and leaves them alone. She is now 2 yrs old and loves picking out her pretties to wear for the day! Good luck on your decision!

Why do you want her ears pieced? Can't you wait until she's old enough to make the decision and care for them herself? There are always risks; it is never truly safe. She could be like me and develop a severe metal allergy from having her ears pirced (I had mine done with I was about 5 or 6 years old, but I wasn't old enough). A metal allergy is no fun at all. It was very painful, my ears swole up and got hot and red. I had to just give up and let the holes heal over since even hypoalergeic earrings didn't work for me. I would never want to see that happen to a baby or todler. In my oppinion it's just not worth the risk.

I would say wait until she is at the very least 8 or 9 years old and let it be her decision.
