A prospect is someone you may be able to sell something to. Generally, insurance or something like that will send out cards and when the people respond they are considered prospects. Then the list is given to salespeople to contact and try to sell them something.
You start with a "lead" (everyone is a lead if you can contact them). If you can get the lead's attention effectively, and there's a chance of a sale, they become a prospect. If you land the sale with a prospect, you have a customer/client/buyer.

It works like this:
You start with a "lead" (everyone is a lead if you can contact them). If you can get the lead's attention effectively, and there's a chance of a sale, they become a prospect. If you land the sale with a prospect, you have a customer/client/buyer.
Simple, huh?
