I never read/watched les misérables but i'm curious as to what happened to poor Fantine that she felt miserable enough to sing the song I dreamed a dream, I know it's only in the musical but I couldn't help but sympathise with her character only from hearing the song by Anne Hathaway.

From being a beautiful young woman with an illegitimate daughter (Cosette) who had a steady job to support her, she became a prostitute whose health declines until her death.
See, being unable to take good care of her daughter Cosette, Fantine had left her with the owners of an inn, the Thénardiers, who agreed to take care of her as long as Fantine would send them money. These people start greedily demanding more and more money from Fantine, and when she's fired from her job because of being a single mother she first sells her beautiful hair (that's why Anne Hathaway's hair is short now, she cut it for real) and has some teeth pulled out, in order to earn money to meet the Thénardiers' demands. Finally, she resorts to prostitution. Out of not being able to take good care of herself and due to the abuse she's suffered, her health declines and ends up dying.
That is why she sings: "My life has killed the dream I dreamed."

Fantine falls in love and gets pregnant. Her lover abandons her, and she later leaves her daughter Cosette in the care of some Inn owners, and gets a job at Jean Valjean's factory. There, they find out that she had a child out of wedlock, so they fire her. Then the Inn owners want more money from her to care for Cosette, so she is then forced to sell her hair & teeth, then must resort to prostitution. As a prostitute, she hits a man and is arrested. She then contracts an unknown disease.

She had met a rich, college student in the summer and got pregnant. (Thats y she sings "he stood a summer by my side, he took my childhood in his stride".)They werent married, and he left her, and because she had an illegitimate child, she sent her daughter, Cosette, to live with the Therandiers to keep it a secret.. She works at a factory to be able to send money to the Therandiers to ake care of her. Fantine's secret gets out and she is immediately fired. She resorts to selling her hair, her teeth, and eventually prostitution. It is at his point in the movie where she sings I Dreamed a Dream. Later, she falls ill with pneumonia, and doesn't get to see her Cosette. She is taken in by Jean Valjean, the main character. Fantine dies, hallucinating about Cosette and singing about her. Jean Valjean vows to find Cosette later, and take care of her as his own child for Fantine.

She became a prostitute after working as a factory worker because she had a child. She got fired because having a child wasn't allowed if you were a factory worker. So she became really sick as a prostitute, and sold everything she had for her child Cosette. The song I dreamed a dream showed that she dreamed that she and her husband would be together again and live a great life. But that never happened, until she died, as she gave away cosette to jean valijean
