What does the author mean by ‘tremulations on ether’ and ‘the novel as a tremulation’?

Though a novel is not alive, it awakens a trembling in the reader. When we read something that we recognize, or something that we identify with, or something that speaks to our soul, we begin to tremble with life. The novel is a trembling, an aliveness, but it's on ether, so it's not completely real.
