I'm watching a show and they said "なーんだ" and the subtitles said it meant "aw", however when I look it up, it translates to "what is it." The context is these two people are talking about romantic relationships, and one person says (translated in English via subtitles) "I'm not there yet," (meaning they haven't gotten into a romantic relationship yet) in which the other person replies "なーんだ, なーんだ,"

Don't trust google translate.
Technically it derives from 何だ, which does mean "What is it" or just "what".
However, "なーんだ" is used idiomatically as an expression of disappointment, like the speaker expected something interesting or exciting to happen but the results were disappointingly dull.
