The war came about due to a trumped-up trial of an important Indian chief, Metacom (King Philip to the British, whose brother, the previous chief, had died in suspicious circumstances while in custody of the English) and the later trial and execution of three Indians accused of murdering Metacom's accuser.

The key colonial figure was Benjamin Church, who was the precursor of many American heroes of fact and fiction (including Natty Bumppo, better known as 'Hawkeye' in "The Last of the Mohicans").

This was a vicious war on both sides. About 10% of military-aged men were killed on the English side, and untold thousands of Indians died. The English also enslaved and exiled about 10,000 Indians, which reduced the Indian population in the area by about two-thirds.
