Gatsby actually had other considerations for the title of his book. Some were:
Gatsby, Among Ash-Heaps and Millionaires, Trimalchio, Trimalchio in West Egg, On the Road to West Egg, Gold-Hatted Gatsby and The High-Bouncing Lover
He must have felt that "The Great Gatsby" fit the book best...or worst. Gatsby is not a great man at all. His wealth is illegal and he has a love for a woman that isn't his, though he does anything he can to get her.
Breaking down the title: "The" seems to suggest that Gatsby was hardly a person, which is kind of true. He was completely fake, everything he did was not really him. You see more of his real side, when he is around Daisy, because he gets nervous from his love for her. "Great" says that HE thought he was great, though he really wasn't. And "Gatsby" was his name (duh!). The title is really ironic, but it added a nice beginning and finish to the novel altogether. I really enjoyed reading it.

Its ironic because was Gatsby a great person
He had a dream of being with a woman he had only kissed once 5 years ago
He got his money from selling alcohol even though there was a prohibition at the time
Is this a great person??

Was Gatsby really "great"?.....I found him to be a tragic and sad character.....I believe that's the irony.
