In bad cases, you may see what look like worm holes in the wood. This could also lead to wood structures or pieces literally falling apart. If you knock on termite infested wood, it will have a hollow or dull sound to it (not a good solid knock that non-infested wood has).
But, the first indication is that you find a bunch of what looks like coarse sand or sawdust on the floor and horizontal surfaces. This is actually termite poo.
Go around your house and look for termite chimneys. Look really good. If you don't see them you are okay. A termite chimney is made with dirt, about half the size of a pencil. That would be the primary indication that you have termite activity.
