As has been said before, one has to be humble, honest, and hungry, and most of all willing to be guided by the holy spirit.
Many anti-theists or anti-Bible persons point to contradictions in the Bible. But a little consideration of these things clears most of them up
Have the right attitude
- humbly accepting the Bible as the word of God, not men. But, instead of having "blind faith", use your power of reason. (1 Thessalonians 2:13; James 4:6; Romans 12:1)
Pray for wisdom.
-instead of leaning on your own understanding, keep on asking God (Proverbs 3:5;James 1:5)
Be consistent
- Like God s faithful servant Joshua, study regularly, not sporadically. (Joshua 1:8)
- Study by topic.
Start with the basics, and then move on to more meaty subjects. You will discover that these scriptures will explain others that are harder to understand. (Hebrews 6:1-2; 2 Peter 3:16)
-Get help from others.
Like the Ethiopian officer who got help from the evangelizer Philip, people of faith who are actually living obediently will use scriptural references to help others to see what the Bible really teaches. (Acts 17:2, 3)
What are NOT keys to understanding are an advanced education or a high intellect. Jesus selected 12 men to be his apostles, men who others considered to be "unlettered and ordinary." (Acts 4:13
Also, what is NOT a key to understanding is MONEY. Jesus said "you received free, give free." (Matthew 10:8)
Really, to understand the Bible is not difficult if the reader is humbly searching for knowledge and wisdom from the Creator. Getting help in this endeavor from a person of faith is actually recommended in the Bible, it relates an account of a man who was returning from the Temple in Jerusalem who was reading from the book of Isaiah. God s spirit spoke to Philip the evangelizer, sending him to meet up with this man, who had never heard of Jesus. While riding with him in his chariot, Philip explained that the verse (from Isaiah chapter 53) and many more, were fulfilled in Jesus. That was all that the man needed to hear. Like finding the last piece of a puzzle, he, in his newfound faith, was ready for baptism. Acts 8:26-38.

Keys are used to unlock locks. Nobody understands the bible, it's just a book of nonsense. Only a phoney person would believe that they understand nonsense. Just take a look at some of these clowns on Yahoo.

There are three things needed to understand the Bible. The Bible, the holy spirit, and the faithful and discreet slave. Matthew 24:45-47
No keys. Understanding is only given by the Lord.
For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
Notice, out of His mouth?
You are to read the Bible to hear God.
Suspension of disbelief, willingness to disregard physical evidence, and a childlike mind.
Keys? No, there are none and none needed. Believers are only trying to make the bible mean what they were indoctrinated to believe, and can acquire that brainwashed meaning only by way of 'auto self-hypnosis'.
The Key to understanding The Holy Bible is the Holy Spirit.
He either unlocks the meaning to sincere seekers, or it remains interpreted to people by themselves or by other people. Given that we are all sinners who cannot see further than the end of our own noses, human efforts at understanding the Bible are usually worse than useless.
To gain the Holy Spirit's understanding, we need to have been born from above by Him, becoming alive spiritually, and adopted into God's family.
Then we have to start reading the Bible prayerfully, seeking to know how it is to apply to us, personally.
Then we have to be obedient to what the Bible teaches us, conforming our minds to the mind of Christ, and our actions to do what God commands us to do.
So, those are 3 key things, but without the first (the Holy Spirit teaching us - John 15:26-16:15) the other 2 will just amount to human striving that simply will not work.
First and most importantly is understanding the bible is a work of mythology that has had a significant cultural impact but its stories are unsupported by evidence. It does have cultural significance so is worthy of study, but it contains only stories.
You can be a person that the Bible says what you want it to and go from there.
