In terms of types of PDAs, there's more than one way to break it down.
Some PDAs have a physical keyboard, and sometimes look like miniature laptops. Some older PDAs in this category, such as some of the HP Jornadas, were even close in size to small laptops today.
Other PDAs only have a screen, and require you to write on the screen using a stylus, or display an electronic keyboard on screen for you to type with. The Newton, the first screen PDA, worked this way, as do Palm devices such as the current Palm TX.
The other major division in PDAs is whether they include some type of connectivity or not, for either data, such as a Blackberry, or as a phone, both. While it's still possible to find standalone PDAs, the majority of the market for these devices has switched to multifunction devices that are PDA, phone, email device, and in some instances support audio and video. The most famous recent device in this category is Apple's iPhone.
