Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system wrongly destroys the beta cells of the pancreas as if they were foreign cells. It results in rendering the pancreas useless so that it no longer produces insulin which is necessary for controlling blood glucose. It is pointless to simply transplant a new healthy pancreas into the body as the immune system will destroy its beta cells all over again. Diabetes is therefore the result of a faulty immune system rather than pancreatic failure which is just a symptom of the former
