I'm writing an essay. Here's the beginning of the first sentence:
In the early 1900s, when cinematic film was first being developed,...
This is a completely serious sentence, so I don't know if I should put "no pun intended" in parentheses. I don't want my professor to get the wrong idea. I also don't want to change "development", because the title of the unit we're covering is "the Development of Literature in Movies".
Help?!

Why risk it?
Best case scenario - the prof thinks it's funny. Worst case scenario: the prof gets irritated b/c he/she thinks you're trying to be funny.
Just change it to something like "In the early 1900s, when cinematic film was in its infancy . . .
Good luck with your decision,
~Dr. B.~
"In the early 1900s, when cinematic film originated...."
An essay doesn't seem like the place to have "no pun intended." I say use a different word.
" in the early 1900s, during cinematic film's nascence..."
"During the rise of cinematic film in the early 1900s...."
Do NOT put "no pun intended" in a formal essay. Do anything but that....
Breaking up a serious essay with a comical aside may give your prof a 'negative' impression of you.
You might not like what develops. Especially if he has a rep for throwing students out on their Cannes.
You can if you want to. But I don't find it necessary if your making a serious essay.
LOL Classic moment.
Just make sure he knows your your not trying to be funny.
