I believe she was for change. But here, she seems to be merely commenting on the fact that, for people, it's not easy to see ideas you've always thought true suddenly proved to be false, or to learn something new, which changes the way you look at the world, or a person, or a situation.
It doesn't mean that that change may not be a good thing - if you've been believing a lie, wouldn't you want to find out the truth? But a change in the way you think, especially a sudden change, can indeed be very painful.
And a "great and sudden change" in the world around you can be equally painful. Whether it's something bad or something good that has happened, it can be difficult to adjust to. Again - it doesn't mean it won't turn out to be for the best, just that it can be hard.
